David's Virtual Awards

I'm not easily pleased believe me, so if you're in my list take a bow

If you're not and you should be, how come I forgot you

A song I can't get enough of

The Ghost of Old Tom Joad by Bruce Springsteen.

Favourite Chat show presenter

Oprah Winfry. Smart, cute and compassionate ... What could be better? Where else would someone like Richard Gere, for just one example, get an opportunity to remind us that China is screwing over a lot of people because it's politics are murderous and oppressive and that we as consumers are propping up a slave labour regime by buying their goods while at the same time inviting us to wish for the happiness of others and entertaining us. Looks simple but it isn't.

Favourite Record Label

WEA especially circa 1975

Photographers

Jane Bown ~ Etienne Bol.

Directors

Scorsese ~ Ridley Scott ~ Tarkovsky ~ Dennis Hopper ~ Ingmar Bergman ~ and about a hundred more

Actors

Impossible question. Frank Finley as Salieri in Amadeus at the West End was about as good as it gets. Gary Oldman rarely lets me down. Mary Steenburgen gets quietly chosen by many a thoughtful director and Juliet Stevenson should make any quality actor want to give up completely she's so accomplished. This list could easily extend into several pages.

Jazz fm

Most respected A&R

Favourite book this week

Favourite royalty collection agencies

GVL and GEMA in Germany.

They put the UK ones, particularly the PPL, to shame, because their focus is where it belongs: paying royalties quickly, accurately and fulsomely to their members

Favourite audio book

Bill Bryson: Made in America (read by Mike McShane)

Favourite Guru/Mythologist

Joseph Campbell

Favourite TV intellectuals

Almost everyone that appears with, and including, Mark Lawson on BBC2's Late Night Review.

Nicki

Most imitated and generally ripped off comic genius

Prime founder of alternative comedy, Alexie Sayle (not forgetting one of his writers, Harry Bogdanovs)

Favourite rap song

"B Movie" Gill Scott Heron

Documentary film makers

David Munroe and John Pilger, Laurie Flynn

Favourite Web Site

For the simple unpretentiousness of its style, its cute graphics and its complete lack of "Hey look at me", I've got a sneaking admiration for www.willa.com

Beneath contempt

You know who you are .... D'you really want to leave this planet to the sound of the rest of us rejoicing that we now carry a lighter load? Stop chiselling and copping a deaf one for Chris'sakes.
