What's New

7.5.04
Just back from a little working trip to Cologne Germany where my good friend Alan Bangs interviewed me and took
this snap. We were busy happily networking our apple macs just for the fun of seeing if we could! ... only guys do that stuff... go figure.

Jule Neigel most generously also bought me dinner while there. Really lovely- Thank you Julia!! :) Will be able to tell you more about that soon Also thanks as ever to Michael K and Wilfried for playing driver! and here's to Germany too, unlike England, for having trains that work really well! :) And thank you so much for the Club flight Gunther - the BA lounge was scrumptious!

In negotiations with labels for the next album. All going really well. Will post the specifics asap.

Love those whacky astrology readings at

I'm reading JB Priestly's book on essayist William Hazlitt
online.
So much quixotic treasure out there on the web, if like being prepared to visit the gym for body, you're also prepared to apply the same discipline to making time for the mind... always easier said than done though I guess,

Just back from Hamburg.
Two nights in the fabulous Marriott... what a treat, Lots of very constructive business meetings (thank you one and all - especially Michael - Lots of music plans afoot invloving a new album, DVDs, touring etc. Will get into specifics soon. Meanwhile, I still need to master the new album ( either in LA or London)- and going back to Cologne for more meetings and interview with my good friend Alan Bangs for a forthcoming DVD- Busy busy which is I guess how I like it. Still hoping I can get the new record out in time for the next tour which starts in September.

31/3/04
Just back from Italy and Czech Republic. Had privilege while checking out an amazing classical venue in Prague called the
Rudolfinum to catch the string section of the Czech Philharmonic practicing Brahm's Requiem. Wow!!! Also a really neat trad' jazz band at the U-Prince Hotel... amazing clarinetist. Thanks to Paul, James, al at Barrandov Studios and everyone else for their fine hospitality. Also revisted a nice antique musical instruments shop which I'd taken a shine to when I played in Prague a year ago.

20th March
Finished mixing.
Sad to stop... wish I could record another 20 songs.

17th March

Mixing at Sphere Studios just keeps getting better. I'm pretty sure we're making our best record to date.

Two snapshots from
Cuba - January 2004

15th March

We none of us much like having our photograph taken and you can see how much I really hate it
here at Sphere's reception desk with this one taken last week by Harry. Ho hum. . . terrible ordeal :)

11th March 2004

Still mixing the forthcoming album at
Sphere Studios with Harry Bogdanovs and Ben Georgiades and having a ball! All smiles - Rabbit seems to be enjoying it too don't you think? :)

Ten tracks now finished and another five or six to go.

Chris Rea most generously added some wonderful guitar to several of the tracks - REALLY REALLY pleased about that. If you haven't seen him playing live you should - he's never sounded better either in terms of material, guitar playing or singing. Legendary producer Chris Kimsey (who features in April's Sound on Sound) has generously mixed a couple of the songs for me too - and has really set a bench-mark for quality with his mixes. Will be working on a song Megan Slankard (shortly to feature in What Not To Wear for BBC TV) and I co-wrote next - which I'm really looking forward too - not least because of the scrum-diddly-umptious orchestra on it Alan Clarke's fantastic hammond - and Megan's delicious backing vocals.

Will try for a September release I imagine.

Visiting Dublin, Berlin, Hamburg, Prague and Italy this month too (between the mixes) for various projects - so never a dull moment - and Los Angeles now positively bellowing to me to catch up with unfinished co-writing projects there as well.

I'm soooo excited at the moment!

Cheers David

For any who may carelessly believe musicians don't have proper grown up jobs - here to dismiss their skepticism -
Harry plays Size 9 Doc Martin - soon to feature alongside cello (rrp £25k).. to form somewhat unorthodox rhythm section.

17th Feb' 04

Recorded four songs with orchestra today - Mmmm-MMmm - Wonderful goose bumpy day - fantastic arranger and musicians - everything I'd hoped for - Angel Studio Three great - with a Neve console I could kiss. Thanks one and all for a fantastic red-letter day - Can't wait to start mixing! I was so excited at the start of the session I thought for a heart pumping moment I might need a defibrillator... fortunately it all went incredibly smoothly!

1st February 2004:

DK very happy bunny today. Great sense of weight coming off my shoulders finally... Where do the months go? I had planned to be in LA but the ongoing recording of my next album (at the Smokehouse and Sphere studios in London) has instead become wonderfully compelling. It doesn't want to let me go.,, so Nashville and LA on hold for the moment.

All indications from my own gut as well as universal reactions of those working on the record with me, it'll be the most compelling "David Knopfler" record to date. I'm soo excited. I've got a couple of co-writes on it I'm really happy about too - - one with Megan Slankard and another with Mack Starks... orchestra booked... can't wait.

I'm as thrilled about making these recordings as I was making my first records - actually a lot more so! :) Band essentially myself, Harry Bogdanovs, Alan Clark, Martin Ditcham, Pete Shaw and Tim Whitehead. Maybe one or two special guests on a couple of tracks too... should know more about that shortly. Knowing what turn around times are like for record labels and the fact I'll first need to find a label! it'll probably not hit the stores until September 2004 - but will keep you posted.

Huge grin! DK
